Pittsburgh in the Winter – Dinosaurs!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

If you have ever been to Pittsburgh you’ve probably seen this dinosaur standing guard outside of the Carnegie Museum of Natural History.  Say hello to Dippy the dinosaur, named after the species Diplodocus Carnegii.  You may also recognize the name “Carnegii”, the species was actually named after Andrew Carnegie (famous industrialist) who financed the expedition that discovered the fossils in Wyoming’s badlands.

Dippy was built in 1999 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the exhibition that found the fossils of the Diplodocus.  Interestingly this bad boy is built to scale at 22ft. high, 84ft. long, and weighs 3,000 pounds.  He’s not sensitive about his weight though, he is just big boned.

Fun Fact – There are plaster copies of Dippy in London (Natural History Museum), Madrid, Spain (Natural Science Museum), Frankfurt, Germany (Senckenberg Museum), and Chicago (Field Museum of Natural History).
